To be part of the solution of transitioning the energy economy to full reliance on renewables
As a volunteer community energy organisation, we are reliant on grant funding, donations, philanthropic assistance, pro bono services, and government support.
To act as an aggregator of rooftop solar generation and engage in residential energy sharing in our local community.
We are an ASIC registered Not-For-Profit Company Limited by Guarantee -ACN 674 308 180. Our company is also registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).
To reduce electricity costs and increase the value of solar feed-in by establishing a large community battery. To encourage the uptake of solar energy.
Based in postcode 2251 in NSW. Technically, the area will be determined by the coverage of Ausgrid's local substation at Avoca. This is broadly analogous to the postcode area with some small deviations around the periphery.
Based on our current understanding we favour Flow Battery technology. In a perfect world it would be great to source this from an Australian company. Flow batteries use a liquid electrolyte and have a lower fire risk when constantly charging and discharging. They also have a lower resource footprint at manufacture.
As we get further along on our journey we will of course undertake a thorough technical assessment of the options available.
If successful our energy model could be expanded or duplicated to benefit other communities
Everyone. This scheme aims to benefit those with or without rooftop solar.
No. One of our aims is to share abundant locally produced excess solar energy with all members of the community.
When up and running this will be a simple process of clicking on the JOIN NOW button.
As a community group we are not allowed to trade in electricity directly. We will be entering into a partnership with a community aligned Electrical Retailer to provide the full range of customer services.
No. As with any other Electrical Retailer you are free to change at any time.
Yes. Initially we had hoped to be able to employ all meter types, but as we have learnt more about the kinds of software needed to support our scheme it has become obvious that smart or interval meters will be required. Depending on possible partnering arrangements with retailers and network providers, it may be possible to bring forward meter upgrades for people connected to our scheme.
The operation of the battery will allow us to store daytime solar energy for later use in the evening peak. The battery will also give us the ability to capitalise on network concessions provided by grid operators, and benefit from cheap off-peak rates at night.
Community PowerShare, a For Purpose Community Based Organisation will own the battery asset.
We hope to locate the battery on land belonging to Central Coast Council as part of a partnering arrangement. We have identified a highly suited location at the former landfill site at Kincumber.
